Description

Flax 405: From Mallon to Mizen is a community engagement project led by our member Kathy Kirwan. The objective is to create 405 equivalent pieces of flax rope, thread and linen that symbolically weave together our shared past, present, and future.

Why 405? Because 405km is the winding distance between Mallon Linen in Co. Tyrone and Mizen Head in Co. Cork.

With this project, we aim to inspire community collaborations in creating an artefact and narrative that embodies shared resilience, cooperation, and craic!

Making cordage is one of the simplest ways that we can use flax.  It takes just a little mastering but quickly becomes muscle memory, meditative.

To make it easy to join the project, we are offering a little kit which contains 100g of scutched flax fibre, grown in Mallon Linen farm in Co. Tyrone, retted and scutched on site.  It also contains a guide on how to make cordage and a little card for winding your cordage.

To be part of the Flax 405 project, you simply send the cordage to Kathy at the address provided, please include your name. If you can’t bear to part with your lovely work, just email kathykirwanflax [at] gmail [dot] com to let us know how much you have produced.

We are offering individual kits with 100g of flax or community boxes with 1kg of flax.

If you would like to donate an additional kit, you can do that here.

Shipping only available to the island of Ireland.
