The polycrisis we face demands that we take a holistic approach to how we meet our needs, and as our first form of shelter, textiles have a big role to play. Questioning the current model of textile production – whose main focus is profit accumulation for the few – attendees will be invited to imagine regenerative and distributive models that can help humans and nonhumans thrive within planetary boundaries.
It will be a day of interactive presentations, craft demonstrations, breakout sessions and fun networking opportunities for Fibreshed Ireland members and non-members alike. The event will include a nourishing lunch for attendees, opportunities for crafting while learning and a gentle yoga break in between sessions.
The day will begin with a deep dive into how we got to the current state of the textile industry worldwide and in Ireland, followed by an exploration of possible alternatives and a conversation about them.
During the event, Anja Sammon will present the ‘Fashion Future project’, where her students in Galway reimagined their school uniforms after learning about the potential of Irish-grown fibres.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their crafting projects to make while listening to the presentations. They are also excellent icebreakers to meet new people!
